Deborah M. Axelrod, MD, director of clinical breast surgery and services and medical director of community cancer education and outreach at NYU Langone Health’s Perlmutter 鶹Ƶapp Center, talks with 鶹ƵappNetwork about new approaches to the surgical treatment of breast cancer, which emphasize using knowledge about the person’s case to do less in the operating room.
“In every modality in breast cancer treatment, doctors are de-escalating treatment. They’re trying to get the same result, but with less damage, less surgery, less chemotherapy, and less radiation,” says Dr. Axelrod, also a professor in the at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. “It’s no different in surgery. We’re trying to do less as well.”
